WordPress vs. Drupal vs. Joomla: Which is the Right Platform For You?

WordPress vs. Drupal vs. Joomla: Which is the Right Platform For You?

WordPress is a clear choice of the majority of people looking for ways to build their website easily and quickly. You can measure the popularity of the WordPress platform because it powers a quarter of all sites on the web.

Another great aspect about WordPress is that it can be operated by non-technical people as well, because of its simple and intuitive admin interface.

Moreover, it makes it easy for novice developers to work on any WordPress site, without having to fiddle with the code.

Apart from WordPress, there are several other great content management systems (a.k.a CMS) that are being used for creating and managing all sorts of websites. According to online reports and survey, WordPress outclasses other CMS systems such as Drupal and Joomla.

However, we cannot decide on choosing a CMS merely on the basis of statistical data; you also need to consider about users' exact needs first to choose the best CMS out there.

In this post, I'll be comparing three of the most popular CMS systems – such as WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla – on several important factors to decide which one of them will best suit your project needs.

1. Which One Is Easy to Use?

One big deciding factor that will make you choose the right CMS platform for your project is: how easy it is to use. Even if you've limited knowledge of developing a site, using a simple and straightforward CMS will make the task a breeze for you.

Both Drupal and Joomla have a lot more complicated admin interface compared to WordPress' user-friendly admin panel. You can create web pages for your website and even start blogging, in just a few minutes, using the WordPress WYSIWYG editor.

Winner: WordPress

2. Which One Provides Better Customization Options?

Customizing how your website looks is crucial to its success. Wondering how? With millions of websites over the web, it is not easy to get your site noticed by your target audience.

But, giving your website a face-lift can more likely help your audience notice your site. Also, a site that offers a lot more features to extend its capability is also important for encouraging your users to visit your website for once.

With the help of add-ons such as plugins and themes can help make your site fit your users' needs. And clearly, WordPress is the winner here. It has more than 37,000 plugins and a plethora of themes (both free and paid) that help in building a visually pleasing website with an enhanced feature set in no time.

That doesn't mean that Drupal and Joomla fail to offer add-ons. In fact, both of these platforms offers plenty of website templates. What's more?

While Drupal provides tons of useful modules for extending a site's functionality, in contrary, Joomla provides several extensions to accomplish the task.

However, compared to WordPress, Drupal and Joomla provide limited resources to turn your website into something that's aesthetically pleasing and highly functional.

Winner: WordPress

3. Which One Helps Manage Content Easily?

No doubt, WordPress makes it super easy to add content to a website using its user-friendly admin panel.

However, when it comes to managing content in thousands of pages, the WordPress CMS platform fails to impress since it lacks content management capability. This is where the Drupal CMS comes in handy.

Drupal is built primarily for developing enterprise level (and complex) websites having thousands of pages. And so, it is far more capable than the WordPress CMS at handling large volumes of data.

Although, even Joomla can help in managing a large number of articles compared to WordPress posts, it cannot match up to the flexibility that the Drupal CMS provides in managing website content.

Winner: Drupal

4. Cost Involved

Unlike WordPress, you'll possibly face a lot of issues in finding credible developers for your project. Since Drupal has a steep learning curve, developers had to learn a lot of skills and gain knowledge of the Drupal platform.

And so, Drupal developers will certainly look for a good payback for providing the desired services. However, you'll only be able to save money if you can build your site on your own.

In contrary to Drupal CMS, Joomla is a bit easy to learn and work with. Also, you can find Joomla developers in a relatively easy manner.

But it still costs more than the WP platform. Moreover, the premium extensions that Drupal and Joomla provides are a lot more expensive than the WordPress CMS.

Of course, as your WordPress site will grow, you'll need a significant amount of resources to address the growing needs of your site.

Winner: WordPress

5. Which One is Secure?

WordPress websites are more likely to get hacked compared to Drupal and Joomla sites. The irony is that the popularity of the WordPress platform makes it the favorite target of hackers.

In fact, the CMS isn't secure out-of-the-box. However, WordPress community keeps on releasing updates to fix the vulnerabilities found in the previous version (if any). Besides, you can even make use of security plugins to improve your site's security.

Joomla provides almost the same level of security just like the WordPress platform. This CMS also provides several security patches to deal with vulnerabilities.

Also, there are extensions that can help make your Joomla site more secure.

But compared to both WordPress and Joomla, Drupal is the most secure platform. It provides detailed security reports and make use of enterprise-level security features.

This is why government agencies prefer using the Drupal CMS.

Winner: Drupal

So, Which Platform is Right for You?

It is up to you which CMS platform you will like to use for your website development project. However, I'll recommend you to use WordPress in case you want to build a website that can be easily managed and customized without having to code.

But, if you wish to build a standard website (like a news and magazine site) that is a little more complicated than a WordPress powered site, then you should consider using Joomla.

And if building an enterprise-level website is your concern, then Drupal is the best platform for you.
